Nutri-Cafe
Nutri-Cafe is a virtual cafeteria on the PWCS web site. It offers our students and parents a chance to make healthy food choices that will last a lifetime. This site provides the nutritional values of each item offered as well as pricing information and what is being served that day. Our students can have fun with this interactive site as they put the food that they select on their tray. It will also help them in making a decision whether to pack or buy their lunch. Let me know what you think of this site. I think that it is a great tool for parents and students as well as myself. To locate the site go to PWCS.edu, select departments, then school food and then click on Virtual Cafeteria at the top of the page.

95210 FOR HEALTH
In the coming weeks, every chance I get, I will be talking to the students about 95210. The campaign Tipping the Scales for Better Health uses the message "95210 for Health". This message communicates 5 key behaviors which promote healthy weight and overall good health for children. As parents and caregivers you can help tip the scales for better health by incorporating 95210 at home and at GVMS we will continue to reinforce the need for a healthy lifestyle. With our fast paced lives it may be hard to practice all of the 5 habits, but even small changes can make a big difference when it come to adopting healthy lifestyles. Over time the small successes will add up to big improvements in the health and wellness of our children and promote life-long healthy habits. Here are the 5 behaviors to work on:

9-Healthy Sleep (At least 9 hours or more)
Ages 5-12 9-11 hours of sleep per day
Adolescents 81/2 to 91/2 hours of sleep per day

     5-Healthy Eating
Eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day

     2- Limit Screen Time
No more than 2 hours each day outside of school

     1- Physical Activity
Get at least 1 hour of exercise each day

     0-Eliminate sugar added beverages
Serve water, low fat milk and 100% juice

Jeepers Creepers
Jeepers Creepers we're collecting old peepers!! Bring your used eyelgasses and prescription sunglasses to school. There is a container in the front office where you may drop them. By doing this you will be giving the "gift of sight" to someone. Your donated glasses wil be reconditioned by the Lions Club and One Sight and then given to people who can not afford to buy them. Last year we collected 70 pairs of glasses ...let's try to beat that number this year.

Start the day off right ..Eat Breakfast

Children are continuously growing and changing every day, and a nutritious breakfast gives children the nutritional boost to get the learning process going. Studies have shown that children that eat breakfast
-learn better
-achieve more
-participate in class more often
-behave better
-attend school more often (less tardies & absences)
-visit the school nurse less often

Some tips for breakfast ...

Eat quick breakfasts like cereal, peanut butter on toast, fruit or a nutrition bar.

Don't like breakfast foods, try cheese and crackers. left overs from dinner or a sandwich.

Remember eating something will be better for your metabolism than skipping a meal.
Infection Prevention and Hand Hygiene

Keeping hands clean is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. It is best to wash your hands with soap and clean running water for 20 seconds.

When Washing hands with soap and water:

  • Wet your hands with clean running water and apply soap. Use warm water if it is available.
  • Rub hands together to make a lather and scrub all surfaces.
  • Continue rubbing hands for 20 seconds. Singing Happy Birthday twice should do it.
  • Rinse hands well under running water.
  • Dry hands using a paper towel or air dryer. If possible, use your paper towel to turn off the faucet.
